The Long Train to Freedom

Days before the 2008 run-off election in Zimbabwe between President Robert Mugabe and opposition party candidate Morgan Tsvangirai, Phil Sandick and I headed down to the train station in Gaborone, Botswana’s capital.  Late at night, Ditshwanelo, Botswana’s human rights group, arranged for 500 Zimbabweans, mostly illegal refugees, to return home to vote in the election.

Hiding behind a warehouse next to the tracks, we spoke to a few of the passengers…
